Mengenal Amfioensociëteit

Amfioensociëteit atau yang dalam Bahasa Indonesia disebut Opium Masyarakat merupakan suatu lembaga yang didirikan oleh Gubernur Jenderal Van Imhoff di Batavia (Jakarta). Lembaga ataupun perusahaan ini mengatur segala sesuatu yang berhubungan dengan perdagangan opium.

Opium merupakan prodek yang penting di kawasan Asia sebelum kedatangan bangsa Eropa. Pada abad ke-17 Batavia merupakan pusat perdagangan VOC. Sebagian Opium dijual ke Bengal ke pedagang kecil. Opium juga diangkut ke pulau-pulau Nusantara dan Cina. Dan pada tahun 1676 VOC memonopoli perdagangan opium di daerah Jawa.

Selain perdagangan resmi terdapat juga penyeludupan besar yang menguntungkan karyawan VOC. Untuk mencegah hal tersebut Gubernur Jenderal Van Imhoff membentuk "Society for the Trade in Amfioen". Perusahaan ini diberi izin menjual opium yang didapat dari Bengal. VOC terus akan menjual opium jika masyarakat da[at membeli 1.200 kasus dengan harga 450 reals. 

The opium produced in Bengal , which was captured by the British from 1756. When the English Calcutta on the local ruler conquered the VOC sent a squadron to protect the Dutch factories (trading firms) in Bengal. The British attacked the squadron without warning and destroyed in peacetime VOC ships. From then forced the British East India Company on a monopoly on the opium trade. The VOC was allowed to buy opium at a hefty price of the English but could not then realize big profits because the British opium itself started selling in China, and since the trade in Java was owned by the Opium Society. After the patent had been extended four times the Society was in 1794 dissolved and succeeded by Amfioendirectie, which was no longer in the hands of individuals but of the VOC itself. This body was responsible for the sale of opium wholesale. On September 17, 1808 - The Dutch East India Company was now dissolved - the Amfioendirectie was by Governor General Daendels lifted.
